“No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”
U.S. Constitution
Would that this were true. Maybe it never truly was. Exhibit A: The cover of the latest Newsweak magazine purporting to tell us all “What Obama Believes”. Week after week of presidential candidates parading their faith in front of voters, attempting to prove their Christian bona fides. While our Constitution is clear in its intent, what we have in practice is a defacto religious test. And more - various states have laws on the books - unenforced (and unenforcible) but there, unchallenged and defiant to the Constitution that supersedes them. And Presidents, who say publicly that non-believers are not even citizens.
I have as consolation that Obama, for all his professions of faith, had a father that was an atheist and apostate Muslim so there is perhaps hope that he will not view non-believers as alien, evil and un-American. Cheers! members of the most distrusted minority in America.
On an unrelated note: At the Livestrong Challenge last Sunday, I did what I never do - entered contests...and WON! We got a very nice Nike/Nissan duffel bag and...Andie won two tickets to see my FAVORITE comedian Lewis Black in August. I...am...STOKED! I'm on the short list to go with her.
